I think what doofusy described is simply an alteration of the zoom level. instead of individual frames he's now zoomed out and sees frames from a further out view. Apart from online backup, I also take the above mentioned precautions.
Always duplicating a layer before applying FX, and always duplicating a clip before merging some layers together.
